Water bus, vaporetto VE 7548, Grand Canal, Venice

A Line 2 “vaporetto” (water bus)
Canal Grande (Grand Canal)
Venice, September 2013

“The single most useful vaporetto line is Line 2 (which old Venice hands might recognize as the old Line 82), the express line down the Grand Canal. It chugs regularly from Piazzale Roma (car park) to Ferrovia (the train station) then on a majestic sweep down the Grand Canal, stopping five times (including at the Rialto bridge and the Accademia) en route to the San Marco-Valloresso just off Piazza San Marco. It takes 25 minutes to reach Piazza San Marco from the train station (add an extra four minutes from Piazzale Roma). In summer, it continues on from there to Giardini and the Lido.” (The vaporetto service in Venice, reidsitaly.com)

“Giuseppe Mazzini (1805–1872) was an Italian politician, journalist and activist for the unification of Italy and spearheaded the Italian revolutionary movement. His efforts helped bring about the independent and unified Italy in place of the several separate states, many dominated by foreign powers, that existed until the 19th century. He also helped define the modern European movement for popular democracy in a republican state.” (Giuseppe Mazzini, Wikipedia)

“After German reunification in 1990 and renovations in 2005, the building became home to the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music, one of Europe's most prestigious conservatories. More renovation work saw a cleaned and restored facade facing Palace Square (Schloßplatz). The Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development estimates that the Neuer Marstell will again achieve reasonable architectural appearance in relation to Palace Square after completion of more restoration and the reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace.” (Neuer Marstall, Wikipedia)

“Restoration of the Grade II listed Power Station is an early priority in the development. Work commenced in 2013 and plans include the restoration of the art deco structure internally and externally, reconstruction of the chimneys, and refurbishment of the historic cranes and jetty as a new river taxi stop. The plan includes over 800 homes of varying sizes, and sales of residential apartments in Phase 1 of the redevelopment began in January 2013 with around 75 per cent of townhouses and apartments being sold within four days. Construction work on Phase 1, called Circus West, is being undertaken by Carillion and commenced in 2013 alongside work on the Power Station. The full redevelopment consists of seven main phases, some of which are planned to run concurrently. Phase 1 is due to complete in 2016/17 with the Northern line extension and requisite new Battersea Power Station terminal anticipated to complete in 2020.” (Battersea Power Station, Wikipedia)

Isola di San Michele (Island of San Michele)
Cannaregio, Venetian Lagoon
Venice, September 2013

“The original church was founded in the 10th Century and dedicated to to the Archangel Michael. A monastery was built too and housed monks of the Camaldolite order from 1212 to 1818. Amongst the monks who lived here were famed cartographer Fra Mauro, and Fra Mario Capellari, who became Pope Gregory XVI. (The crater Fra Mauro and the Fra Mauro formation of the Moon were named after the monk.) The church was enlarged and consecrated in 1221. Rebuilt in its current form 1469-78 by Mauro Codussi, this was his first building in Venice and Venice's first church in the Renaissance style. The design of the façade and its use of Istrian stone solely was very influential on Venetian church architecture.” (San Michele in Isola, The Churches of Venice)

Fifteen Years

The Sphere by Fritz Koenig, Battery Park, New York

“The Sphere” by Fritz Koenig, 1971
Battery Park
New York, September 2008

For three decades, this sculpture stood in the plaza
of the World Trade Center. Entitled “The Sphere”, it was
conceived by artist Fritz Koenig as a symbol of world
peace. It was damaged during the tragic events of
September 11, 2001, but endures as an icon of hope and the
indestructible spirit of this country. The Sphere was
placed here on March 11, 2002 as a temporary memorial
to all who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks at the
World Trade Center.
This eternal flame was ignited on September 11, 2002
in honor of all those that were lost. Their spirit and
sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Karl Friedrich Schinkel

Statue of Karl Friedrich Schinkel by Friedrich Drake, Schinkelplatz, Berlin

Statue of Karl Friedrich Schinkel by Friedrich Drake, 1869
Schinkelplatz
Berlin, September 2011

“Schinkel, however, is noted as much for his theoretical work and his architectural drafts as for the relatively few buildings that were actually executed to his designs. Some of his merits are best shown in his unexecuted plans for the transformation of the Athenian Acropolis into a royal palace for the new Kingdom of Greece and for the erection of the Orianda Palace in the Crimea. These and other designs may be studied in his Sammlung architektonischer Entwürfe (1820–1837) and his Werke der höheren Baukunst (1840–1842; 1845–1846). He also designed the famed Iron Cross medal of Prussia, and later Germany. It has been speculated, however, that due to the difficult political circumstances – French occupation and the dependency on the Prussian king – and his relatively early death, which prevented him from seeing the explosive German industrialization in the second half of the 19th century, he was not able to live up to the true potential exhibited by his sketches.” (Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Wikipedia)
